Could This Champions League-Winning Superstar Be The Answer To Newcastle United’s Left-Back Woes?

Barcelona full-back Jordi Alba is set to become a free agent in the summer [via Fabrizio Romano on Twitter] – with Newcastle United in need of a left-back, the Spanish legend could provide a solution to the problem.

While Alba would likely command a high wage, as no transfer fee would be involved, it would be a relatively risk-free move – and one that Eddie Howe and Newcastle United should seriously consider.

In Romano’s tweet, he wrote: “Jordi Alba leaves Barcelona. Spanish left back will part ways with the club — it’s over after many years together. Alba will try new chapter as free agent.”

Why Newcastle United should sign Jordi Alba

Jordi Alba is arguably one of the greatest left-backs of all time. His adroit technical ability, combined with electric pace, have helped to make him a bonafide superstar over the course of his star-studded career.

Some may have concerns regarding Alba’s age – he is now 34. As such, Newcastle should not see him as a long-term solution – but he should still be able to handle football at the highest level for another couple of seasons.

Additionally, as Newcastle United will be partaking in the Champions League next season, having a veteran of European football within their ranks can only be of benefit to the Toon.

Jordi Alba career summary

Jordi Alba spent time at clubs such as Hospitalense and Cornellà before making his senior debut for Valencia in 2009. He spent three seasons with Los Che before he was snapped up by Barcelona in 2012 for a reported transfer fee of around £12 million.

Since then, Alba frequently established himself as one of the world’s leading left-backs. Over the course of his career, Alba has won the La Liga title six times, the Copa Del Rey five times, the Champions League and the European Championships with Spain.
