“Different Priorities…” Romano Raises Questions About Newcastle’s Pursuit Of Liverpool Outcast

Newcastle are not prioritising a move for Liverpool midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano.

The 29-year-old is expected to leave Anfield on a free transfer when his contract expires in June and the Magpies, along with Brighton and Aston Villa, were credited with an interest in the player. However, while Romano says some Premier League teams are pursuing the former Arsenal star, he believes Eddie Howe’s team are focused on other targets:

“From what I’ve been told, there are two clubs in England and two clubs abroad looking at him at the moment. There is interest but [it] is very early and not advanced, at this stage. Newcastle, for example, have different priorities in that position, so I wouldn’t read too much into that particular story.”

While recruiting Oxlade-Chamberlain would have been a risk due to his poor injury record, he could have added depth in certain positions. He can play as a number eight, as a winger or as an auxiliary wingback.

However, Newcastle appear to have different options lined up. Nice’s Khephren Thuram and Wolves’s Ruben Neves have been suggested as potential targets in the middle of the park, while the club are also looking to strengthen the frontline, with the likes of Atalanta’s Rasmus Hojlund, Athletico Paranaense’s Vitor Roque and Borussia Monchengladbach’s Marcus Thruram having been linked.
