‘Outstanding’ Eddie Howe Praises Newcastle Star Following Man City Defeat

Newcastle United were defeated by Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City on Saturday afternoon by a score of 3-2. It was a sickening defeat for Toon fans – however, head coach Eddie Howe had some high praise for one of their best players on the day.

Alexander Isak was excellent against the Sky Blues, constantly putting their backline under pressure and making himself a nuisance. He scored Newcastle’s first goal of the outing, plucking the ball out of the air and firing a spectacular finish beyond Stefan Ortega.

This was followed up by a goal from Anthony Gordon to put Newcastle in front – sadly, goals from Kevin De Bruyne and Oscar Bobb were enough to turn the tide and give City the three points.

What did Eddie Howe say about Alexander Isak?

Speaking with Sky Sports in his post-match interview, Howe said: “I thought that when he had his highest energy his overall performance was outstanding. I thought he was a constant menace for them. He showed his ability to run he showed his ability to link play he showed his ability to finish.

“I’m just disappointed that we couldn’t get him in more dangerous situations in that second half because I’m sure he could’ve made the difference for us.”

Could the game against Man City be a turning point for Newcastle?

Newcastle’s poor run of form has been a call for concern amongst the Toon fanbase in recent weeks. Despite this, their excellent performance against the reigning Premier League champions – even if it resulted in a defeat – no doubt made for encouraging viewing.

Regardless of their depleted squad, the Mags matched their opponents every step of the way and were somewhat unfortunate to come away with nothing – two pieces of world-class quality from the returning Kevin De Bruyne ultimately sunk Newcastle on the day. Had the Toon been able to select from a fully fit squad, the result may have been very different at full time.
