Newcastle have entered the race to sign Atalanta centre-back Giorgio Scalvini, according to reports in the Italian media.
Both Chelsea and Manchester City have been keeping tabs on the 19-year-old for quite some time, while the likes of Inter Milan, Napoli and Atletico Madrid are also known to be keen admirers.
Scalvini is already a fully-fledged Italian international despite still only being a teenager, having made his debut in June last year in a 5-2 defeat to Germany.
Atalanta are said to be reluctant to let him go this summer, but it is believed that they may be willing to discuss a transfer if a team is prepared to pay €40m (£35m).
Do Newcastle Need Another Centre-Half?
Fabian Schar and Sven Botman have been a formidable centre-back pairing this season but manager Eddie Howe does lack depth in that position.
Other than captain Jamaal Lascelles, there aren’t any other squad members who play regularly at centre-half, with the likes of Dan Burn usually deployed at left-back.
Scalvini has been known to play in midfield as well so that would be an added bonus as he could provide cover for two different roles.
