Newcastle winger Anthony Gordon says that St James’ Park is undoubtedly the most intimidating atmosphere he has played in as an away player.
The 23-year-old faced the Magpies during his time at Everton before he made the move to the North East at the beginning of 2023. When asked about the most difficult away grounds to play at, he chose Newcastle before also mentioning Arsenal:
“As an away player, St. James’ [Park], no question about it but, for me, obviously playing for Newcastle, I would say… pfff; [The] Emirates [Stadium].”
Newcastle lost 4-1 away to the Gunners last season, which is the only time that Gordon has played at their ground since joining the Magpies.
Gordon’s future is still uncertain
Manager Eddie Howe has tried to play down speculation about the forward’s future over the past week or so, but there is a feeling that Gordon’s head has been turned by the interest from Liverpool.
Despite coming through Everton’s youth system, he supported the Reds growing up and it is believed that he would not reject a move to Anfield if he was offered the opportunity.
Newcastle are under no pressure to sell
Although talks were held between Liverpool and the Magpies last month, it is believed that the winger‘s sale was only considered because the club needed to balance the books.
However, after offloading Eliott Anderson to Nottingham Forest for £35m, there are no longer any concerns about the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability rules.
Gordon’s future will need to be addressed pretty soon as he does have less than two years remaining on his contract. If he isn’t willing to sign an extension, there could be more speculation about a transfer in January or at the end of next season.
