Newcastle could “raise the stakes” in the race to sign Strasbourg striker Emanuel Emegha, according to reports in France.
Foot Mercato claim that the Magpies could get involved despite Chelsea planning to “push” for the 22-year-old’s signature.
Strasbourg is owned by Blueco, which is a company set up by Chelsea’s two main shareholders, Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital.
It means that Strasbourg are effectively a feeder club for the Blues, allowing players to move to and from the two teams with relative ease.
Emegha has shown a lot of promise
Although their chances of beating Chelsea to the Dutchman look slim, Eddie Howe’s side’s interest in the player is not totally surprising.
Emegha has been in good form this season, having scored 14 goals and playing a key role in helping Strasbourg challenge for European qualification.
Foot Mercato report that the forward harbours a desire to play in the Premier League so he would be keen on making the switch to St James’ Park if his transfer to Stamford Bridge doesn’t pan out.
Why do Newcastle want the striker?
Callum Wilson is set to leave the Magpies when his contract expires at the end of next month. William Osula is undoubtedly a promising young player, but it would be a lot to ask him to become the main backup option for Alexander Isak.
Sporting director Paul Mitchell is, therefore, exploring the market for potential signings and Emegha appears to be among the shortlist of candidates.
Newcastle have also been linked with other No.9s in recent weeks, including the likes of Wolves’ Matheus Cunha, Juventus’s Dusan Vlahovic and Lille’s Jonathan David. However, all of those names would want to be regular starters, while Emegha may be satisfied with less game time.
