Newcastle ‘Taking A Close Look’ At £47M France International As They Eye Possible Tierney Alternative

Newcastle are weighing up a potential move for Real Madrid fullback Ferland Mendy, according to TEAMtalk.

The website claims that the Magpies are “taking a close look” at the France international, who is set to be made available for transfer this summer.

Mendy joined Real from Lyon for £47m in 2019 but he has struggled for game time this season, having started just 17 league games for the Spanish club.

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe is in the market for a new left-back and it appears as if the 27-year-old has come under consideration.

An Alternative to Kieran Tierney?

The Magpies have been heavily linked with a move for Arsenal’s Kieran Tierney but the Gunners are believed to be holding out for a fee in excess of £3om.

Reports in Spain suggest Mendy is likely to be available for less than £20m, so there are financial reasons why the club may favour a move for the Real Madrid star.

There are, though, question marks over both players when it comes to their fitness records. Mendy has missed 54 matches due to injuries over the past four years, while Tierney has been sidelined for 48 games during the same period.
