Newcastle United have been linked to signing Wolves striker Jorgen Strand Larsen since the summer transfer window.
The Magpies signed two forwards in the summer, Nick Woltemade and Yoane Wissa. Woltemade has impressed in flashes, but he’s lacked consistency, and Wissa has hardly been fit, and when he has been fit, it hasn’t been impressive.
Newcastle could opt to go in for another striker in the January window, and one name they’ve been linked with is Wolves striker Jorgen Strand Larsen. Newcastle bid on Strand Larsen in the summer, but according to The Athletic, they would now have to battle Leeds United and Spurs if they wanted to sign him.
Instead, they should consider a more experienced Premier League striker, who has become available in the past couple of days.
Newcastle should target Mateta instead
Crystal Palace have had a tough couple of days. Marc Guehi has joined Manchester City, manager Oliver Glasner has said he’s leaving in the summer, and now striker Jean-Philippe Mateta has said he would like a ‘new challenge’.
Sky Sports reported on Friday that Mateta wants to leave Palace, as he wants to play for a Champions League club. Newcastle could enter the race to sign the 27-year-old Frenchman, as he has been one of the best number nines in the Premier League over the past few years.
Mateta has scored 10 goals in 32 games for Palace this season, and has a market value of just £35m, meaning he would likely cost less than Strand Larsen. Many would agree that Mateta is a much better player than the Wolves striker, and seeing as he wants to play Champions League football, Newcastle could be the perfect destination, and they should be able to tempt him to come to St James’ Park.
