Newcastle United are believed to be interested in a move for Wolfsburg midfielder and Manchester United transfer target Felix Nmecha, according to a report from The Telegraph.
The Telegraph says that Nmecha will cost the Toon around £15 million – for a club with Newcastle’s financial muscle, this will be a mere drop in the ocean.
However, if they want to bring the German international on board, they must beat Manchester United to the punch – the Red Devils have reportedly ‘held talks’ with the player.
What would Felix Nmecha add to the Newcastle United squad?
A talented, powerful midfielder with a 6ft 2 frame, Nmecha looks tailor-made for the Premier League. He has impressed many onlookers in the Bundesliga, which has a similar tempo and intensity to England’s top flight.
A box-to-box player by trade, Nmecha will face stern competition in the form of Joelinton if he wishes to break into the Mags’s first team squad on a regular basis. Despite this, he has youth on his side – he is just 22 years of age, while his Brazilian counterpart is now 26.
As such, Eddie Howe may have the future in mind when looking at a move for Nmecha. Moreover, the Toon lack quality depth in the box-to-box role – a transfer for Nmecha would provide this in spades.
Felix Nmecha’s career so far
Born in 2000, Nmecha graduated from Manchester City’s academy at the age of 19, when he signed a professional contract with the club. He made his Champions League debut in 2020 against Olympiacos, where he provided an assist for Joao Cancelo, but he never made a senior league appearance for the Sky Blues.
He was released by City in 2021 and subsequently joined Wolfsburg on a free transfer. Since then, he has gone on make 36 appearances for Die Weißgrünen, scoring two goals in the Bundesliga. He plays alongside his brother, Lukas, who was also released by Manchester City at the end of the 2020/21 season.
Additionally, he has won a solitary senior cap for Germany to his name. He has played for both Germany and England at various levels of their respective youth setups, but opted to play for Die Mannschaft at senior level.
