Ex-Newcastle striker Louis Saha says a new ground would “supercharge” the Magpies’ ability to win the Premier League.
It has been reported that the club’s owners PIF could invest £1.2bn in a stadium and, speaking to spaceportsweden.com, Saha said that the move away from St James’ Park could aid them in challenging the likes of Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester City:
“Newcastle is a massive club. I actually think that they are a club that can challenge for the title, but a new stadium and the revenues that go with that would supercharge that challenge.”
“They need a bit of improvement in the squad, but I don’t think that they are far off. They are close. If they can get their numbers right in terms of revenue, then there is absolutely no reason why Newcastle can’t take the next step. Of course, it will take time, it isn’t going to happen overnight but having that infrastructure in place will secure the foundations of the team to be competitive for years and years.”
“They have so many fans in that region. It will be great, but you need to find a way to get the right fans as well. It’s strange what I’m going to say, but I remember back in the days the stadium was a bit smaller, and the atmosphere was absolutely crazy.”
PSR has hampered the club’s progress
As Saha points out, more revenue is what Newcastle need for the next stage of their development under their current owners. The Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability rules have hindered the club’s ability to spend over the last couple of seasons.
However, a brand new stadium could help the club increase their profits and enable them to challenge their rivals on a level playing field.
Newcastle are making strides off the pitch
The Magpies have seen their revenues increase significantly over the past four years. According to Deloitte‘s Football Money League table, their earnings have risen 29% year on year to €371.8m.
Considering that they were only raking in €185m in 2020, there have been massive improvements off the pitch. The stadium would, though, allow them to go one step further.
