Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer says head coach Matthias Jaissle may want “one or two” further additions to the first team in the New Year.
The Magpies spent heavily during the summer transfer window, but Shearer thinks Jaissle might request more signings after he has had time to fully assess his squad:
“The manager’s got to try and understand who and what he’s working with. So, yeah, it will take time.”
“It maybe also might take one or two other signings and whether that’s January or whether that’s at the end of the season, but I think patience without doubt will be needed at times this season.”
Newcastle United signed 8 players in the summer
The squad underwent a significant rebuild during the last transfer window, with the likes of Matias Fernandez-Pardo, Nico Gonzalez, Bazoumana Toure, Amar Dedic, Aladji Bamba, Lukas Hornicek, Sean Steur and Ewen Jaouen all being brought in.
Sporting director Ross Wilson spent £273m on reinforcements in total, significantly decreasing the average age of the first team in the process.
Jaissle has only just got his feet under the table
It is important not to forget that the German has only been in his post for just over 7 weeks, which means he still doesn’t know most of his players that well.
For that reason, you would hope that Wilson would be listening to Jaissle in terms of where he feels the team could be further strengthened in upcoming windows.
Despite the significant outlay on new signings, the net spend for the summer was only just above £30m, with the departures of Bruno Guimaraes, Sandro Tonali and Anthony Gordon bringing in significant income. That should leave room for manoeuvre for more arrivals in January.
