Didi Hamann Identifies Key Factor That Could Lead To Alexander Isak Asking To Leave Newcastle

Former Newcastle midfielder Didi Hamann claims the Magpies will have a better chance of keeping hold of Alexander Isak if they qualify for the Champions League this season

Speaking to Prime Casino, Hamann suggested that the Swedish international is more likely to request a transfer if Eddie Howe’s side fail to finish in the top 4/5:

“There might be a player like Isak who says in the summer, well, if you don’t play Champions League, then I’ve got to move on because to win the Champions League, you’ve got to be in it. And they might be able to keep him for a season if they’re not in it.”

“But the Champions League would make things a lot easier because then you’re in a strong position you might be able to extend one or two contracts.”

Isak has never expressed any desire to leave St James’ Park

Despite being heavily linked with the likes of Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool in recent months, the 25-year-old has made it clear that he is happy at Newcastle.

Speculation about his future did increase after Howe confirmed back in October that talks over a new contract had stalled. As Hamann points out, though, if the Magpies do secure Champions League qualification, there will be more money available to pay Isak what he is demanding.

Newcastle are in contention for a top 4/5 finish

The 4-3 win over Nottingham Forest at the weekend means that Howe’s men are now level on points with Manchester City in fourth place.

With 5th position now likely to be enough to qualify for the Champions League, due to England’s UEFA coefficient, the Magpies have put themselves in a decent position to achieve their goal. Isak’s future could therefore hinge on results over the coming months.
