Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon does have a release clause in his contract, according to reports.
The England international signed a new deal in October last year and I News reporter Mark Douglas claims that a buyout fee was included as part of the agreement.
It is believed that Gordon’s price is similar to the £100m clause which was present in Bruno Guimaraes‘ contract.
The club captain was only available for that figure in June 2024, and it is not clear whether there are similar preconditions for Gordon.
Premier League rivals have been linked with Gordon
Liverpool were said to be very close to securing his services in the summer of 2024 before the plug was pulled on the deal. The Reds have subsequently signed Alexander Isak and a host of other attacking talent, so it would be a surprise if they returned with another approach for Gordon, despite the player reportedly being a fan of the Merseyside club.
Arsenal have also been mentioned as potential suitors. Back in January, respected journalist David Ornstein said the Gunners had “huge admiration” for the 23-year-old, although they didn’t make an offer in the transfer windows that followed.
Newcastle will be confident of keeping hold of the player
The £100m price tag is likely to scare off interested teams from making a move for Gordon. No team opted to pay that much for Guimaraes despite the likes of Manchester City being heavily linked with the Brazilian, and you could reasonably argue he is a better all-round player.
If Gordon were to have an incredible season, scoring goals and providing assists to a level we haven’t seen from him before, it could pose more issues, but the Magpies are unlikely to be too concerned about losing him currently.
