Liverpool and Arsenal are set to battle it out for a second Newcastle player this summer, according to reports.
Not satisfied with trying to land Alexander Isak, TEAMtalk claim that the Premier League’s top 2 are also keen on signing Anthony Gordon.
It believed that the two teams are “admirers” of Gordon’s ability. Liverpool’s interest is not surprising as they tried to secure the former Everton winger’s signature last year.
However, a move to Anfield did not materialise as the Magpies ultimately ended up selling Yankuba Minteh and Elliot Anderson to balance the books.
Arsenal first explored a deal last year
While Liverpool’s past attempt to buy Gordon was more high profile, there were rumours near the end of the summer transfer window that the Gunners were looking at buying the England international too.
Ultimately, nothing came of their interest as Mikel Arteta’s side opted to bring in Raheem Sterling on loan from Chelsea instead.
That move has not worked out, with Sterling set to return to Stamford Bridge this summer but it will leave a gap in the squad, and it could lead to the London side reviving their pursuit of Gordon.
Howe is keen to keep his best players at Newcastle
TEAMtalk reports that head coach Eddie Howe has made it clear to the Magpies’ hierarchy that he wants to retain the services of every key player.
Of course, that will be much easier to do if his team qualify for the Champions League. If they do win their game in hand against Crystal Palace on Wednesday, it would move them clear of the chasing pack.
Howe’s side are currently sitting 4th in the table on 56 points. A victory later this week would leapfrog them above Nottingham Forest and give them a five-point gap to Chelsea in 6th with six games to go.
