Newcastle United are set to revive their interest in James Trafford, according to reports.
The Daily Mail claim that the Magpies are “expected to return” with an offer for the 23-year-old just months after losing out to Manchester City for the keeper.
Trafford was reportedly promised first-team football by the Cityzens after they triggered their buyback clause in July.
However, they subsequently brought in Gianluigi Donnarumma from Paris Saint-Germain, and Trafford has been relegated to outings in the Carabao Cup.
The Magpies are aware that he wants to be playing regularly and it appears they are willing to table a bid for the former England Under 21 international in January.
He has expressed an interest in joining Newcastle in the past
Speaking on a podcast earlier this year, Trafford confirmed that he was keen on making the switch to Newcastle from Burnley when they first made an offer for him before the start of the 2024/25 season:
“In the summer, I think people knew I wanted to move. The club that I was close to going, it was a good fit for me. It was brilliant for me and I really believed in it.”
Trafford ultimately ended up staying at Turf Moor and helping his team to promotion. Yet, he now appears to be regretting his decision to return to City.
Trafford would still have competition
Nick Pope has not started the season particularly well, and it is felt that even if he hadn’t been sidelined with a groin injury, he would have lost his place to Aaron Ramsdale.
The former Arsenal keeper took the gloves for the win over Everton, and his presence in the squad may give Trafford second thoughts about a transfer to St James’ Park following his experience at City.
