Newcastle United appear to be having second thoughts about making a move for Man City goalkeeper James Trafford.

The Chronicle claim that the long-term Magpies target was not even mentioned in a recent recruitment meeting,

Furthermore, they have confirmed with sources that Man City have had “no contact” from the Magpies following Trafford’s return from the World Cup.

It is not certain that Eddie Howe’s side have cooled their interest, but it doesn’t look like a bid is imminent.

Why have Newcastle United stepped away?

Man City’s price tag could be to blame. It is believed that Enzo Maresca’s side are now demanding £50m for Trafford. That is a significant markup on the £31m they paid just under a year ago.

After pursuing the 23-year-old in the last two summers, it seems as if the Magpies won’t make a third attempt to recruit him. Things could, of course, change, especially if the Cityzens do lower their asking price between now and the end of the transfer window.

Are the club considering any alternatives to Trafford?

It is believed that Parma’s Zion Suzuki has been offered to the club by intermediaries, and he would be considerably cheaper to sign, with the Japanese international said to be on the market for around €20m (£17m).

Brighton’s Carl Rushworth has also been mentioned as a potential target previously. He had an impressive loan spell at Coventry City last season, playing a pivotal role in helping Frank Lampard’s side secure promotion from the Championship.

For now, though, it does look like Howe will head into next season with current number one Nick Pope (who has less than a year left on his contract) and new signing Ewen Jaouen as his two main options between the sticks.
