Newcastle Enter Race With Man Utd For Fullback With 13 Assists This Season

Newcastle United are interested in Borussia Dortmund right-back Julian Ryerson, according to reports in the German media.

Bild claim that the Magpies have joined the likes of Manchester United and Barcelona in pursuing the Norwegian international.

Ryerson has been in phenomenal form so far this season, having racked up 13 assists in only 29 appearances for Dortmund.

4 of those came in one match against Mainz on Friday evening, as the 28-year-old set up all of his team’s goals during a 4-0 rout.

Why are Newcastle looking for a new right-back?

Kieran Trippier is not expected to renew his contract with the Magpies. The former England international’s current deal expires at the end of June, and it looks likely that he will leave St James’ Park four and a half years after joining from Atletico Madrid.

Emil Krafth will also be departing the North East this summer. The 31-year-old has played just three games this campaign after picking up a knee injury, although he is expected to return to action before the end of February.

Ryerson would provide competition for Livramento

While Tino Livramento is very highly rated by manager Eddie Howe,  the 23-year-old has been on and off the treatment table since his arrival from Southampton in the summer of 2024.

It means Newcastle could do with having someone who can not only fill in for Livramento when he is absent, but can also offer something to the team when he plays.

Ryerson is an experienced player, and his form this season demonstrates what he can offer going forward. It should be emphasised, though, that Dortmund play with wingbacks, unlike the Magpies, so he would need to adapt to a back four if he were to make the switch to the North East.
