Journalist Makes Alexander Isak Claim As Newcastle Make £62.5M Forward Their “Top Transfer Target”

Newcastle are still keen are on keeping hold of Alexander Isak despite making Matheus Cunha their “top transfer target”, according to the Daily Mail reporter Craig Hope.

The journalist, who has insider knowledge on the goings-on at St James’ Park, claims that the Magpies are set to challenge Arsenal and Manchester United for Cunha’s services.

There is likely to be a scramble for the Brazilian international’s signature, with the player having a £62.5m release clause in his contract.

However, the nature of the clause means that any team will have to pay the full amount up front, and the only way Eddie Howe’s side would be able to do that is if they qualify for the Champions League.

The club still have some concerns regarding the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability rules so finishing in the top 5 would give them some leeway financially.

Where would Cunha fit into Newcastle’s starting lineup?

The 25-year-old is not an out-and-out No.9 and he can be deployed on the wing or in a support striker role if needed. That means there is scope for selecting him alongside Isak.

It is believed that the presence of Bruno Guimaraes and Joelinton, two of his international teammates, could also persuade him to join the Magpies above other teams.

What is the situation with Isak?

Liverpool and Arsenal are said to be interested in recruiting the Swedish striker but it appears both have been put off by Newcastle’s sizeable valuation.

In another report last month, the Daily Mail suggested that chairman Yasir Al-Rumayyan would not sanction Isak’s sale under any circumstances.

That has likely hardened the club’s resolve to turn down any bids. They are under no pressure to sell with the 25-year-old’s contract set to expire in 2028.
