Newcastle United Enter Battle With 2 PL Rivals For Spanish International Who Could Soon Be Available For Free

Newcastle United are among the teams who are interested in signing Celta Vigo right-back Oscar Mingueza, according to reports in the Spanish media.

The 26-year-old is out of contract at the end of the season and AS (via Sport Witness) claim that the defender is receiving “very attractive offers” from other clubs.

In addition to the Magpies, two other Premier League sides are keen on Mingueza, with Aston Villa and West Ham having signalled their interest.

AS report that Italian trio Como, AC Milan and Atalanta, as well as Ligue One side Marseille, are also looking to tie the Spanish international down to a pre-contract agreement ahead of a free transfer next July.

What do fans need to know about Mingueza?

The fullback came through Barcelona’s youth system, making his senior debut for their B side prior to making 66 appearances for the first team between 2020 and 2022.

Mingueza left the Camp Nou and joined Celta on a free at the end of the 2021/22 campaign and he has gone on to play over 100 games for the Spanish side over the past three and a half years.

While he is ostensibly a right-back, he has been deployed as a centre-half, in midfield and on the left during his career, which demonstrates his adaptability.

Newcastle could be looking to replace Trippier

As things stand, the Magpies are not expected to renew Kieran Trippier’s current deal, which expires next summer.

Manager Eddie Howe has continued to start Trippier on a regular basis this season, but he did turn 35 in September, and many feel that the long-term plan is for Tino Livramento to succeed him as first-choice, with Lewis Hall taking up the position at left-back.

A replacement for Trippier could still be needed, though, so the interest in Mingueza does make a lot of sense.
