Reliable Journalist Shuts Down Claims That Spanish Starlet Is Close To £34.5M Transfer

Celtia Vigo attacking midfielder Gabri Veiga “will not be signing” for Newcastle this summer, according to the Daily Telegraph reporter Luke Edwards.

The journalist claims that “several sources” have told him that the Spanish Under 21 international is not a transfer target for the Magpies:

It had been reported in the Spanish media that Veiga was closing in on a move to St James’ Park, with the club prepared to pay his €40m (£34.5m) release clause.

However, if Edwards is to be believed, that information was wide of the mark and it seems as though Newcastle boss Eddie Howe will be looking at other options to strengthen his squad.

Veiga is a highly rated young player with plenty of admirers

The 21-year-old has had a breakout season with Celta Vigo, having scored 11 goals and provided four assists in 36 league appearances. His brace against Barcelona on the final day of the season helped to secure his team’s top flight status.

Real Madrid have been credited with a strong interest in Veiga, although they have now focused their efforts on recruiting Borussia Dortmund’s Jude Bellingham instead. The likes of Manchester City, Manchester United, Liverpool and Arsenal have also been mentioned as potential suitors.

Newcastle are still in the market for a new no.10

While a move for Veiga is dead in the water, the Magpies are believed to be keen on recruiting an attacking midfielder.

There are two standout candidates, Leicester City’s James Maddison (who could cost £40m to £50m) and RB Leipzig’s Dominik Szoboszlai (who has a €70m/£60m release clause).

Other names are being considered. Ajax’s Mohammed Kudus is known to be on the club’s radar while, over the weekend, the club were linked with Lyon’s teenage sensation Rayan Cherki who, like Veiga, has had a breakthrough year.
