REPORT: Newcastle United Face Setback In Pursuit Of 62-Cap Midfielder

Newcastle United have faced a setback in their pursuit of Ajax’s Edson Alvarez – while a move to Tyneside has not been ruled out, Borussia Dortmund appear to be the frontrunners to acquire his signature [via Fabrizio Romano on Twitter].

It’s not all bad news, however – while Dortmund’s intent to bring the Mexican midfielder on board seems apparent, Bayern Munich’s interest in the player has reportedly gone cold.

In Romano’s tweet, he wrote: “Borussia Dortmund have concrete interest in Edson Alvarez, as German press reported. He’s one of the names in the list for next season. Deal will also depend on other clubs as there are Premier League teams interested. Bayern, not working on it as of now.”

On top of this, several other Premier League clubs are thought to be interested in Alvarez – including Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester United. Therefore, should Newcastle wish to bring Alvarez to the club, they will need to fend off interest from several world-renowned big hitters.

Edson Alvarez career summary

Born in Tlalnepantla de Baz in Mexico, Alvarez’s first foray into professional football began at Club América – he signed for the club as a youth player in 2014, when he was just 16 years of age.

He would go on to make his debut for the club in 2016, aged 19, playing a full game against Santos Laguna. Quickly, he was noted for his indomitable work rate and impressive range of passing.

In 2019, Alvarez was headhunted and signed by Ajax, where he remains to this day. So far, he has made 97 appearances for De Godenzonen, scoring ten goals.

Additionally, Alvarez has also made several appearances for his native Mexico, receiving his first senior cap when he was just 19 years old. Now at the age of 25, he has won 61 caps for El Tri, scoring three international goals. He was also featured in Mexico’s 2022 World Cup squad.
