REPORT: Newcastle United Shot-Stopper Pulls Out Of England Squad With Injury

Newcastle United goalkeeper Nick Pope has pulled out of the England squad for their upcoming Euro 2024 qualifiers with an injury.

The former Burnley ‘keeper’s injury isn’t thought to be serious – he merely picked up a knock in the Toon’s win over Nottingham Forest at the weekend – nevertheless, he will play no part in England’s upcoming international fixtures.

England will play Italy and Ukraine in their upcoming pair of Euro 2024 qualifying games. To replace Pope in England’s squad, manager Gareth Southgate has handed a call-up to Tottenham Hotspur’s Fraser Forster.

The 30-year-old still played the full 90 minutes against Forest – as such, he should be fit to play in Newcastle’s next competitive fixture against Manchester United on April 2 at St. James’ Park.

Pope isn’t the only England player to have departed the squad due to injury – Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford and Chelsea’s Mason Mount are also both out.

Following Pope’s withdrawal, Newcastle have just one player in the current England squad – Kieran Trippier. Other Toon players such as Callum Wilson, Dan Burn and Sean Longstaff did not make Southgate’s final team. Perhaps the most notable omission was former Arsenal player Joe Willock, who has been in inspired form for the Magpies in recent weeks.
