Popular pundit Ally McCoist has tipped Newcastle United to sign former Liverpool and Southampton winger Sadio Mane on TalkSPORT’s Breakfast radio show.
The former Rangers man believes it could be a move that would make sense for all parties involved. Mane is reportedly seeking a move away from Bayern Munich, while the Toon are looking to bolster their ranks and remain a top four club.
Despite this, McCoist expressed doubts over whether Newcastle would be able to afford his wages. While the Magpies have no shortage of finances, most of their players are not established superstars – bringing in an all-star like Mane, who will command a monster wage, could upset the dressing room.
What did Ally McCoist say about Newcastle and Mane?
McCoist said: “That’s a potential [transfer]. They probably can’t afford the wages [Mane] is on. But they would certainly look after him. I still think there is a better chance of him going somewhere like Italy.”
At 31, Mane is reaching the twilight of his glittering career. He is best known for his time at Liverpool, where he helped to fire the Reds to a Champions League victory and a Premier League title.
Mane would certainly be a fantastic signing for Eddie Howe’s men, but they may look to seek out a more affordable option – interest in Mane is believed to be high.
