Newcastle midfielder Bruno Guimaraes says he has never really contemplated leaving St James’ Park.
The Brazilian international claims he has lived his dream by playing in the Premier League and he is proud to be wearing the captain’s armband at the Magpies:
“I believe that at my club I am an idol and I have a lot of respect. I am the captain of Newcastle and it is something that if you had asked me three years ago, my biggest dream would have been to play in the Premier League. Playing, being an idol, being captain is something wonderful. I really like Newcastle.”
Manchester City have been heavily linked with Guimaraes in recent seasons but the midfielder said that, barring one brief conversation with manager Pep Guardiola, there has never really been any contact with the Premier League champions:
“Of course, having Manchester City’s suggestions shows that I am at a high level, but it was nothing more than suggestions. I know that Guardiola likes my football, it is normal to have great coaches who admire your football. We have spoken once after the interview, I praised his work, he praised my work, but it was nothing more than that.”
Guimaraes no longer has a release clause
There was heightened speculation about a potential transfer earlier this year due to the existence of a buyout clause in the 27-year-old’s contract.
Guimaraes could be signed by any club for £100m during the month of June but bids from City and Arsenal did not materialise.
The player has committed his future to Newcastle
When Guimaraes signed a contract until the summer of 2028 last year, not many believed that he would see out the deal, considering the interest in the Brazilian.
Based on his recent comments, though, it looks increasingly likely that he will remain in the North East for the foreseeable future.
