Newcastle had a high-ranking official “in the stands” to watch Lille’s Jonathan David play against Nice last Friday, according to reports.
The Magpies are keen on recruiting a new forward and Chronicle Live claim an observer was in attendance to see David play in his last league appearance.
Considering that the Canadian international is out of contract at the end of the season, there will be a fair few teams keeping an eye on him.
David has found the back of the net 17 times in all competitions and a player of his quality doesn’t become available on a free transfer very often.
Newcastle could face a bidding war
Chronicle Live report that Eddie Howe’s side may face competition from up to six Premier League rivals in the battle for David’s signature.
Chelsea, Arsenal, Aston Villa and Manchester United all have a longstanding interest in the striker, while the likes of Liverpool and Tottenham have been linked more recently.
There is a strong possibility that a “bidding war” will ensue. At the moment, David’s wage demands are well within Newcastle’s budget. He is said to be demanding £120,000 a week but he could potentially ask for more if he receives offers from multiple teams.
David is just one of several forwards who could make the switch to St James’ Park
Howe and sporting director Paul Mitchell are aware that a replacement needs to be found for Callum Wilson. The England international will leave when his contract expires in June.
However, Newcastle may not bring in a traditional No.9. In addition to David, the club have been linked with the likes of Bournemouth’s Antoine Semenyo, Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo, PSV’s Johan Bakayoko and Monaco’s Maghnes Akliouche – they are all wide players who can also contribute goals.
