Newcastle striker Alexander Isak has played down speculation that he is unhappy at St James’ Park.
The 25-year-old was reportedly left disappointed after the Magpies ended discussions over a new contract, prompting rumours about a transfer but, speaking on international duty, Isak said:
“Throughout my career, I have never talked about or really commented on the move rumours during the season. There have been many such years where it has been talked about. It doesn’t affect me.”
“I am commenting on my situation in Newcastle, and I have never had any problem there. I am fully focused on my task there and that we will have a fantastic season. There are still great opportunities for that. I have no thoughts about anything else.”
“The only thing I can say is that a lot of information and rumours often come out. Much of what I read is not true. So that’s about all I can say about the whole thing.”
4 Premier League rivals have been linked with signing Isak
Earlier this week, it was reported that Liverpool and Manchester City had joined Arsenal and Chelsea in pursuing the Swedish international.
All four teams are said to be looking to sign a new No.9 and they are keeping close tabs on Isak’s situation.
Newcastle are under no pressure to sell
While it was a surprise when head coach Eddie Howe revealed last month that talks over a contract extension had stalled, it should be emphasised that the Magpies are not in a position where they need to offload Isak.
The forward signed a six-year contract, keeping him at the club until 2028, when he first arrived in the North East so there will still be three years remaining on his current deal when this campaign is over.
Isak’s comments also suggest that he won’t force through a move, which means the club can ignore the interest from potential suitors if they want.
