Newcastle United have identified three names as potential replacements for Miguel Almiron, according to The Athletic.
The website has confirmed that the Magpies have retained an interest in Nottingham Forest’s Anthony Elanga, having recently made an enquiry for him when they were in negotiations to sell Elliot Anderson.
Elanga only joined Forest from Manchester United last July but he has admirers among Newcastle’s recruitment department.
The 22-year-old is right-footed which may count against him considering they are trying to strengthen the right wing, but he is a player who is just as capable of playing on either flank.
Who are the two other wingers that Newcastle are pursuing?
Chelsea’s Noni Madueke and West Ham’s Jarrod Bowen have been mentioned on several occasions as potential targets over the past few weeks and it is believed that Eddie Howe’s side are still very keen on the pair.
With funds having been freed up following the sales of Anderson and Yankuba Minteh, it does make bids for those two players more realistic, although Elanga is still likely to be the cheapest option on their shortlist.
Why are the club looking to replace Almiron?
The Paraguayan international’s form over the past year hasn’t been particularly great. He scored just 5 goals in all competitions last season and contributed only 3 assists.
There is also the prospect of raising a sizeable amount from Almiron’s sale as Saudi Pro League clubs have considered signing him. The fact that he is now 30 years of age is another factor.
Almiron is not expected to be the only one joining Anderson and Minteh in heading for the exit door over the coming weeks. Callum Wilson, Kieran Trippier and Sean Longstaff are in the last twelve months of their contract and it is thought that all three have been made available for transfer.
