Negotiations over a new contract for Newcastle striker Alexander Isak have “stalled”, according to TBRFootball.
The website claims that the Magpies opened talks with the Swedish international’s representatives last Easter but certain issues have led to discussions grinding to a halt.
Interest from Arsenal and Chelsea has not unsettled Isak but Newcastle are concerned that the forward is demanding a release clause.
Even if the buyout fee is in excess of £100m, it may not put off the two London clubs from making an approach in a future transfer window.
Will this be a repeat of what happened with Guimaraes?
Isak‘s teammate Bruno Guimaraes did get his way with regards to a release clause, but the Magpies are clearly keen to avoid a similar situation with the forward.
TBR claim that Eddie Howe’s side don’t feel they are too far away when it comes to an agreement on personal terms. He would likely become the joint highest earner at the club. However, interest from other teams makes negotiations rather complicated.
What has Isak said about his future at Newcastle
Speaking in the summer, the 25-year-old said he had no interest in a move away from St James’ Park:
“I have no thoughts on leaving. There has been no talk about it at the club, and I have received no information that the club would have to sell me.”
There were some rumours that the Magpies could be forced into offloading Isak to comply with the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability rules but it is believed that the club never had any intention to sell him. The fact that they are now trying to tie him down to a new deal (despite his current one still having four years left to run) is more evidence of that.
