Newcastle have entered the race to sign Lecce wingback Patrick Dorgu, according to the Gazzetta Dello Sport (via Sport Witness).
The Italian newspaper claims that the 19-year-old is in demand after scoring on his debut for Denmark during the international break.
Dorgu came on as a substitute in his country’s 2-0 victory over Switzerland in the Nations League last Thursday night, and he scored the opening goal.
The teenager then received his second cap as Denmark won 2-0 against Serbia a few days later, playing the final 25 minutes of the match in Copenhagen.
What do fans need to know about Dorgu?
The Dane made his first-team breakthrough at the start of last season, making his debut in the Coppa Italia tie against Como in August last year.
Dorgu played mostly as a left-back during his first year but, since the appointment of Luca Gotti as head coach last March, he has been deployed further up the pitch. He has been exclusively used on the left wing and as a right winger since the start of this campaign.
Newcastle will have a lot of competition for the player
Gazzetta Dello Sport report that Chelsea, Tottenham, Juventus and Napoli have all been keeping close tabs on Dorgu, but they note that these teams should “watch out for Newcastle” who have taken a keen interest recently.
However, when asked about his favourite club in an interview last year, he said:
“Yes, it’s Chelsea.”
It should be pointed out that Dorgu also said his ambition in general is simply to play in England:
“My dream is, of course, the Premier League, but right now I am also in a very good place in my career. If it were to be somewhere in Italy, it wouldn’t be too bad either.”
Dorgu is currently valued at around €30m (£25m) by Lecce but it is believed that his asking price could rise to €40m (£34m) if he has a good season.
