Newcastle ‘Closing In On Deal’ To Sign Player They Had £15M Bid Rejected For Earlier This Summer

Newcastle are poised to seal the signature of Burnley keeper James Trafford at the second attempt, according to The Guardian.

The newspaper reports that the Magpies are “closing in” on a deal to sign the 21-year-old on loan with an obligation to buy at the end of the season.

Trafford was the subject of a £15m bid back in June but Burnley rejected the proposal at the time, and the transfer stalled.

However, The Guardian claim that Newcastle have maintained their interest in the England Under 21 international with manager Eddie Howe said to be a keen admirer of his abilities.

What do fans need to know about Trafford?

The goalkeeper came through the youth ranks at Manchester City before having loan spells at Accrington Stanley and Bolton Wanderers (twice).

Burnley splashed out an initial £15m to bring Trafford to Turf Moor last summer, with add-ons potentially taking the fee up to £19m. However, he has struggled during his time at the Clarets.

Trafford lost his place to Ari Muric midway through last season and, while he has regained the No.1 spot this campaign, he has yet to fully regain his confidence.

Newcastle could have SIX keepers in the first-team squad

Trafford’s arrival at St James’ Park would come as a shock to fans, who have already seen two shot-stoppers arrive at the club during the current transfer window.

Odysseas Vlachodimos was brought in from Nottingham Forest as part of the deal for Elliot Anderson, while John Ruddy came in on a free transfer from Birmingham City. That means there are currently five first-team keepers, including Nick Pope, Martin Dubravka and Mark Gillespie.

Trafford’s arrival could increase the number to six but it is believed that Vlachodimos could be loaned out, despite only arriving a couple of months ago, while Dubravka may be sold.
