Newcastle have ended their interest in Arsenal left-back Kieran Tierney, according to journalist Charles Watts.
Writing on the Daily Briefing Substack, Watts said that the Magpies have not revived their pursuit of the former Celtic player, who was a target in last summer’s transfer window:
“I haven’t heard anything to suggest Kieran Tierney will be heading to Newcastle That was a move that looked certain last summer. I was convinced when the 2022/23 season finished, Tierney would end up at St James’ Park.”
“There was a real expectation that the deal would happen, but Newcastle opted to go down a different route and they signed Lewis Hall from Chelsea instead. That killed the chances of Tierney going there and I can’t see anything changing this summer when it comes to that potential move.”
Howe has kept faith in Hall despite a difficult first season
Newcastle will sign Lewis Hall on a permanent basis for £24m at the end of this month. There was speculation that the club wouldn’t go ahead with the deal after manager Eddie Howe started him just eight times in the league last campaign.
However, the left-back played regularly in the final two months of the season, ending any suggestions that he would return to Chelsea.
Newcastle still hold an interest in another Arsenal player
Even though a move for Tierney has been ruled out, Howe is still reportedly keen on signing Aaron Ramsdale from the Gunners. The pair worked together at Bournemouth and it appears the Magpies boss would like to be reunited with his former player.
When negotiations began for James Trafford, talk of a move for Ramsdale did quieten down but that deal for the Burnley keeper has run into difficulties over the transfer fee, so the club may yet decide to go after Ramsdale instead.
