Anthony Gordon is set to be named in the starting lineup when Newcastle take on Southampton this weekend, according to NewcastleWorld journalist Jordan Cronin.
Speaking on the Geordie Journos show on Shots!, Cronin said that the winger’s performance against Girona last Friday suggested that he will be fit enough for the Saints clash:
“The positive from the night is that he was back and probably would have felt the love a little bit after a few months of speculation, which everyone is aware of in terms of Liverpool, but I think it’s really positive that he’s played [against Girona] and put in a very good shift as well. I’d be surprised if he doesn’t start next week [versus Southampton] to be honest.”
“I think Eddie Howe mentioned at the end there that Anthony Gordon will be ready for next week and, for me, that’s as good as confirmation that he will start, and he should, to be honest.”
Gordon has been heavily linked with Liverpool
As Cronin mentions, there have been constant rumours about a potential move to the Red half of Merseyside.
It has even been reported over the past week by The Athletic that the Magpies agreed to sell Gordon to Liverpool for £75m (with Joe Gomez moving in the other direction), only to pull the plug on the deal at the last minute.
Newcastle won’t be forced into selling the player
Due to the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability rules, there was more pressure to offload Gordon back in June, but the departure of Elliot Anderson to Nottingham Forest for £35m means more sales are not required.
In fact, it looks as though the Magpies could be prepared to spend heavily before the transfer window shuts at the end of this month, having tabled a bid worth up to £60m for Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi.
