Newcastle legend Alan Shearer says the Magpies will have to have battle Manchester United, West Ham and Brighton for sixth spot.
Eddie Howe’s team drew at home to Everton on Tuesday night, leaving them four points adrift of the top six, having played a game more than Man U (who currently occupy the position). Speaking about his former club’s chances of qualifying for Europe, Shearer said:
“It’s frustrating with all of the injuries that they’ve got. But they’re in a battle with Man United, West Ham and Brighton to finish sixth. (They’re) up against it, though.”
Sixth is expected to be enough for Europa League qualification with England set to be given an additional Champions League place based on the latest coefficients.
While fans would love a return to Europe’s premier competition after getting a taste of it this season, that is not realistic given they are are 13 points adrift of Tottenham.
Europa League football would still be an achievement, especially after all the challenges that Newcastle have faced in recent months.
Injuries continue to blight the Magpies
Manager Eddie Howe is currently without ten first-team players due to injury. Matt Targett (Achilles) is the closest to returning to action but Kieran Trippier (calf), Nick Pope (shoulder), Tino Livramento (ankle) and Miguel Almiron (knee) are still weeks away from making their comebacks.
Captain Jamaal Lascelles (ACL), Sven Botman (knee), Lewis Miley (back), Callum Wilson (abdomen) and Joelinton (thigh) are out for the long term.
Newcastle may face another contender for sixth
It should be noted that Chelsea do have a game in hand over Manchester United and, if they beat them on Thursday night, they will be within 5 points of their opponents.
Based on their lack of consistency this season, though, Shearer is probably right to say that there are only 4 contenders for a top-six finish.
