Despite their shaky current form, Newcastle United are currently enjoying one of their most fruitful Premier League campaigns in decades. After years upon years of mediocrity, the Toon finally seem to be mounting a serious challenge against the league’s top contenders, such as Manchester City, Manchester United and Arsenal.

Much of this can be put down to Newcastle’s canny recruitment. It’s very easy to splash the cash on international superstars – instead, the Magpies have opted for a more conservative approach, buying lesser-known talents and developing them.
