Ian Wright Claims Newcastle Ace’s “Unbelievable” Volley Deserved To Be Named PL Goal Of The Season

BBC pundit Ian Wright says he would have awarded Miguel Almiron’s “unbelievable” volley against Fulham as his Premier League Goal of the Season.

The strike from the Newcastle winger didn’t make the Match of the Day top three, with Gary Lineker ultimately giving the prize to Julio Enciso’s goal for his long-range howitzer in Brighton’s game against Manchester City. However, Wright believes Almiron should have come out on top:

“My goal of the season? I probably would have gone for Miguel Almiron against Fulham. With the outside of his left foot, he volleyed it over to the goalkeeper’s right. Unbelievable goal, unbelievable technique. You don’t do that, you wouldn’t do that. It’s so underrated that goal.”

As Wright says, it was an astonishing piece of skill from Almiron. Some volleys are simply ‘hit and hope’ efforts, which are lucky to find the back of the net, but the Paraguayan’s goal was calculated.

The 29-year-old is left-footed, so he decided to use the outside of his stronger foot to control the ball and fire it past Bernd Leno in Fulham’s goal. It was a perfectly executed hit.

Almiron has had an outstanding season

After struggling to really make an impact in his first few campaigns with the Magpies, in terms of providing a goal threat; all that changed for the winger this season.

Almiron went through a purple patch, which started with that match at Fulham in October, and he picked up eight goals in just nine league matches. He will be hoping for another hot streak like that in front of goal next campaign.
