Is This Midfield Gem The Most Underrated Player In The Premier League?

Newcastle United are currently enjoying a fantastic season under Eddie Howe in the Premier League. Their star players, such as Nick Pope, Sven Botman and Bruno Guimaraes have rightfully received heaps of praise – but we feel there is one underrated star who has flown under the radar.

Of course, we’re talking about Joe Willock. The former Arsenal youngster has been great for a few years now – but this season, the 23-year-old has begun to show the full extent of his potential.

He possesses wonderful dribbling ability – he loves nothing more than bursting through a midfield, but he will occasionally drift out wide if there is space for him to exploit. No one in Newcastle’s midfield has made more progressive carries than Willock – 67 in total.

Because of this, he’s also very exciting to watch. He always looks in front of him before playing a pass – negativity is not a part of his game. However, his bravery can sometimes lead him to concede possession – sometimes in dangerous positions.

Thankfully, Eddie Howe tends to set Newcastle up to be effective on the counter. Therefore, Willock can often afford to take risks in midfield, as he knows there will be plenty of players behind him to provide cover.

Not only this – but he is also beginning to find his goalscoring touch. This season, Willock has scored three goals and registered four assists in the Premier League.

So what does the future have in store for this starlet? Newcastle fans will be elated to know he is under contract until 2027 – given the extent of his talents, they won’t let him go without a fight either.
