Serie A Wonderkid ‘Very Close’ To Joining Newcastle United On Permanent Transfer

Newcastle United are reportedly in the hunt for Inter Milan 18-year-old Kevin Zefi with a potential transfer in mind, according to a recent report from Italian sports media outlet Calciomercato.

The Irish youngster, who is also eligible to play for Albania internationally, has yet to make an appearance for Inter Milan. On top of this, since rumours of his transfer to Newcastle surfaced, he has ceased training with the U19s on the orders of Cristian Chivu (Inter’s U19 head coach).

As things stand, it is currently unclear as to whether the Mags have submitted a bid for the player or not. Additionally, the amount that Inter will require for him to leave the club is unknown – his contract with the Italian giants is set to expire in the summer of 2024.

Zefi isn’t the only youngster that the Toon have been in pursuit of during the ongoing summer transfer window – they are currently trying to complete a deal for Chelsea wonderkid Lewis Hall.

Are Newcastle United looking to build for the future?

Newcastle’s current propensity for purchasing young players seems to suggest that short-term success is not currently on the agenda at St. James’ Park – at least, it is not a priority.

Instead, the Toon seem to be focusing on setting themselves up for a strong future by building a team of young players – bringing in wonderkids such as Lewis Hall and Zefi is a great way to do this.

Where would Kevin Zefi fit into the Newcastle team?

Zefi’s natural position on the pitch is in attacking midfield, playing just behind the striker. However, Eddie Howe prefers to play a 4-3-3 formation, which does not accomodate a number ten role.

Thankfully, Zefi can also function as a left winger. As such, he will likely play in this position if he is snapped up by the Magpies in the transfer window.

It is difficult to envision him earning much gametime in the 2023/24 season, though. The Toon have some excellent wingers on the left at the moment, such as Anthony Gordon and Harvey Barnes – but there may be time for Zefi to gain some first-team experience during cup competitions and the like.
