New Report Rates Chances Of Former Chelsea And United Manager Replacing Howe In Newcastle Dugout

Jose Mourinho is “extremely unlikely” to be in the running for the Newcastle job even if they dispense with the services of Eddie Howe, according to the Northern Echo.

The ex-Chelsea, Manchester United and Tottenham head coach was sacked by Roma on Monday, with the Giallorossi sitting 9th in the Serie A table.

Last month, Mourinho was mentioned as a potential candidate to replace Howe in the dugout and his sudden availability has raised the spectre of him being appointed Magpies boss.

However, the Northern Echo claim that Newcastle have “no intention” of sacking their current manager at this time despite some poor recent form.

Why is Howe under pressure?

The Magpies have slipped to 10th in the Premier League table, with their 3-2 defeat against Manchester City last weekend being their fourth loss in a row.

However, there are mitigating circumstances that may lead to Howe being afforded more time to turn things around. The first-team squad has been decimated by injuries in the first half of the season and there is hope that, when players return to fitness, there will be an upturn in form.

Would Mourinho be a good fit for Newcastle?

The Portuguese manager does come with a stellar reputation, having won an incredible 26 trophies in a decorated career. However, he has struggled to replicate his past glories in his last two jobs at Spurs and Roma.

Mourinho did not win a single trophy at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium before leaving after less than 18 months in the job. He did lift the Europa Conference League during his time with the Giallorossi but it was the only bright spot in what was a very disappointing spell in charge.

If Newcastle do decide to part ways with Howe in the future, it appears they will overlook the chance to appoint Mourinho.
