Jamie Carragher Names The Newcastle Ace Who Could Displace Cole Palmer In The England Squad For The Euros

Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher believes that Anthony Gordon’s form for Newcastle could get him a place in England’s squad for the European Championships.

The 22-year-old has yet to be capped at senior level by his country but Carragher suggests that his performances for the Three Lions in the Under 21 tournament last summer, combined with his Magpies displays, may see him get the nod ahead of Chelsea’s Cole Palmer.

“Cole Palmer was in the last squad, and he has been outstanding since he has gone to Chelsea. But if you go back to the summer where this great form for Gordon started, you probably go back to the under-21 tournament in the summer where England won the tournament; he was the best player, and Cole Palmer was actually on the bench.”

“In some ways, Palmer has overtaken him in terms of getting into the England squad, which is maybe a little bit harsh, but for me, if he continues to how he is going, I think it could be a toss-up between him and Cole Palmer.”

Gordon has made the step up

5 goals and 4 assists in just 12 league appearances is a very impressive return from the £40m January signing from Everton.

Following his arrival at St James’ Park, there were some question marks about Gordon’s attitude, and he didn’t feature as prominently in the second half of last season as some had expected.

However, after performing well for England’s Under 21s, the winger returned to pre-season ahead of schedule and he worked his socks off in order to be in the best possible shape for the new campaign. His efforts have paid off so far.

Will the Newcastle star make it into the England squad?

At the moment, Gordon has simply had a very strong start to the season. He will need to carry on and maintain this level until the last game in May to be in serious contention for the Three Lions.

There is a lot of competition for places, especially on the wings, and Gordon must give manager Gareth Southgate very little option but to select him.
