Garth Crooks has praised Newcastle midfielder Bruno Guimaraes following his magnificent brace in the 3-2 win over Nottingham Forest at the weekend.

Writing in his Team of the Week column, the BBC pundit said Guimaraes’ two goals were up there with the “best” he has seen “all season”. He also paid tribute to the Brazilian international’s passion to play for the shirt:

“The skill and technique required to produce such a high-quality finish on the volley against Forest was sensational, while his second goal was worthy of winning any match. Guimaraes has been an inspiration ever since he arrived at St James’ Park. The Geordie fans have always loved their midfield ball players, especially those who wear their heart on their sleeve and show them that they care, and Guimaraes is one of those.

No Magpies supporter would disagree with Crooks’ remarks. The 26-year-old has been in outstanding form in recent weeks.

Doubts about Guimaraes’s future remain

Despite signing a new five-year contract back in October last year, it hasn’t stopped speculation surrounding the midfielder.

It is believed that a release clause worth £100m was included in Guimaraes‘ new deal and his current form may tempt several clubs into triggering it next summer.

Who else joins the Newcastle in Crooks’ Team of the Week?

Crooks selected Liverpool keeper Caoimhin Kelleher in goal after the Republic of Ireland international performed well in the absence of Alisson Becker against Burnley.

In defence, Arsenal duo William Saliba and Gabriel were chosen alongside Manchester United centre-back Harry Maguire.

Guimaraes is joined by Manchester City playmaker Kevin De Bruyne, Chelsea’s Conor Gallagher and Arsenal’s Declan Rice in midfield.

Up front, Crooks went with Brentford’s Ivan Toney, City’s Erling Haaland and Arsenal winger Bukayo Saka.
