REPORT: Newcastle United Could Make Move For Out-Of-Favour Arsenal Defender

Newcastle United could make a move for Arsenal’s Kieran Tierney, a report from The Chronicle has suggested.

Tierney has struggled for game time at Arsenal this season – he has found himself benched more often than not in favour of former Manchester City player Oleksandr Zinchenko.

Additionally, Premier League leaders Arsenal are enjoying one of their best seasons in years – however, Tierney has made little contribution to their success this year. He’s only made four starts for the Gunners this campaign, scoring no goals and registering no assists.

Despite their vast resources and wealth, Newcastle have struggled in the left-back position this season. Currently, Eddie Howe is mainly deploying Dan Burn in that position – while not a natural full-back, the former Brighton man has done an admirable job there. Regardless, the Toon will likely search for a natural left-back in the summer.

On top of this, against the highest tier of opposition, Burn can find himself out of his depth at left-back – he was given a torrid time in the League Cup final by Manchester United’s Antony.

Therefore, a move to Newcastle from Arsenal for Tierney looks like a no-brainer for all parties involved. Should Tierney join the Magpies, he would be reunited with Scotland compatriot Ryan Fraser, who began his career at Aberdeen. Tierney, meanwhile, made his start in professional football at Celtic.

Eddie Howe was recently asked where he would like to improve his team in a press conference. He said: “Every game gives that clue of where you need to strengthen. We are always analysing where we can improve and how we need to get better.”
