The Reasons For Newcastle United’s Poor Form Following Manchester City Defeat

Following a very strong first half of the Premier League season, Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United are experiencing something of a slump in form.

Before the game against Liverpool, Newcastle had lost just a single Premier League game all season – now, they have lost three. Not only this, they also have failed to win in the Premier League since January 15.

Newcastle’s incredibly resolute defense has looked relatively shaky in recent weeks. This may be due to Howe’s sudden desire to push his team forward in games – it cost them dearly against the Scousers, where Jurgen Klopp’s team were more than happy to take advantage of the Toon’s high line.

Additionally, it should also be noted that Newcastle have had a very tough schedule as of late. In their last three games in all competitions, the Toon have faced Liverpool, Manchester United and Manchester City – losing each game by a score of 2-0.

Newcastle are creating chances, but they are not being converted by their attacking players. Miguel Almiron in particular is going through a bad spell – he is the Toon’s top goalscorer, but has not found the back of the net since February 11th.

It can’t all be blamed on Almiron, of course – Alexander Isak, Callum Wilson and Allan Saint-Maximin are also going through barren spells in front of goal.

Regardless, due to the enormous quality of their recent opposition, Magpies fans shouldn’t be too worried – there is no shame in losing to such strong teams.

Newcastle will have a chance to recapture their early season form when they take on Wolves at the weekend – it will prove to be a stern challenge, but the Geordies have more than enough quality within their ranks to get their season back on track.
