Alex Grimaldo

Benfica’s Alex Grimaldo seems to be Newcastle’s top target for the left-back position at this moment. It’s not difficult to see why – the 27-year-old has been excellent this season.

Grimaldo has scored five goals and has racked up 13 assists across all competitions this season for Os Encarnados – for a left-back, these are seriously impressive numbers.

Whether the Spaniard would be able to replicate these tallies in the Premier League remains unclear – however, his two goals and three assists in the Champions League this season make for encouraging viewing.

With Matt Targett now available again following injury, Eddie Howe might find he has enough options at left-back without spending funds on another player. As reported by ChronicleLive Howe said in regards to the former Aston Villa man “We’ve definitely missed Matt. First and foremost, he’s a great player. A great character,” going on to say, “He’s a very, very consistent trainer and someone who goes about his business in a very professional way. He’s got very different attributes to Dan and, in his own right, is an outstanding player. Having him back is a great boost for us.”

It remains to be seen if Targett gets the opportunity to play much this season for the magpies such has been Dan Burn’s form.
