Pope perhaps would have been much more revered had he been born 20 years earlier. His shot-stopping and presence in the box are both brilliant, but his distribution leaves something to be desired.
This is a detriment in the modern game, where ball-playing goalkeepers are becoming ever more common. Despite this, Pope is still a top-class ‘keeper and provides a brilliant understudy at international level to Everton’s Jordan Pickford.
