‘1 Down 1 To Go’ ‘Wouldn’t Be Surprised If He Bottles It’ Newcastle Fans React As PL Star Closes In On £86M Transfer

Bayern Munich have agreed a €100m (£86m) fee to sign Tottenham striker Harry Kane and Newcastle fans have been considering the ramifications for Alan Shearer’s scoring record.

Some supporters on X are delighted that the England captain is leaving the Premier League but others still fear that he will make a U-turn on his future:

Kane is still quite far behind Shearer’s record

Shearer holds the all-time record for goals, which currently stands at 260, while Kane is only on 213; 47 behind the Newcastle legend’s total.

Even if he opted to remain at Spurs next season and left on a free transfer instead, Kane would not be able to reach the record, so the debate about him staying to beat Shearer is rather redundant.

However, if Kane does sign a new contract, there would be a very real danger that he would surpass Shearer’s number during the 2024/25 campaign.

Haaland may also be a threat to Shearer

Considering that the Manchester City striker scored a record 36 league goals in his first season in England, there is a case to be made that the Norwegian may surpass both Kane and Shearer in the future.

However, even if Haaland maintains his current scoring ratio, it would still take him roughly another 6 and a half seasons to get to 260. With reports suggesting that he may like to play for Real Madrid at some point, there is no certainty that he will stay in the Premier League for that long.
