Southampton manager Russell Martin says he is hoping that Newcastle target Tino Livramento stays at St Mary’s beyond the summer.
The Magpies have had several bids knocked back for the 20-year-old, but Martin is keen to continue working with the fullback:
“He is a really exciting player to work with, a real talent, and I’m enjoying working with him. Hopefully, it will stay that way.”
It was believed that Eddie Howe’s side were looking to bring in Livramento for below £20m, but some reports suggest that Southampton are holding out for as much as £50m.
The reason for the exorbitant price is said to be down to the sell-on clause that the defender’s previous team Chelsea have on the player.
The Saints would only still get £30m if they sell Livramento for £50m, so the Championship club have been reluctant to lower their demands.
Chelsea could also enter the running to sign the right-back
It has also been claimed that the Blues may try and re-sign the defender before loaning him back to Southampton.
That would be an attractive option for the Saints as the buyback clause is said to be worth as much as £40m, but Livramento is not so keen on the idea.
Chelsea already have two right-backs in Reece James and Malo Gusto and, considering the fact that Livramento left Stamford Bridge because there was too much competition, he is not thought to be interested in returning to London.
What that means for the player’s future is anyone’s guess. It appears as if the fullback would like to move to Newcastle, but his club are not going to make things easy. As the Magpies are working within a strict budget due to Financial Fairplay restrictions, they may well have to move on to a cheaper transfer target.
