Newcastle have made “contact” with the agent of Juventus midfielder Adrien Rabiot, according to HITC.

The website claims the Magpies are one of four Premier League clubs, along with Tottenham, Liverpool and Arsenal, who have held direct discussions with the Frenchman’s representatives.

Manchester United are also said to be considering a move for Rabiot, who is out of contract at the end of the season.

Foreign clubs are already allowed to discuss a pre-contract agreement with the 28-year-old, who reached the World Cup final with France in 2022.

Rabiot remains a key player for Juve so his availability on a free transfer would make him an attractive target for the likes of Newcastle and others.

Newcastle do need to be creative with their signings due to FFP

While the purse strings are likely to be loosened to some extent when the summer transfer window opens, the Magpies will still have to work within certain restrictions due to Financial Fair Play.

Exploring the free agent market to bring in players who can strengthen the first team is a creative solution. You would effectively be improving the club’s squad options without affecting the balance sheet.

Midfield is an area that will need to be strengthened

It appears that Joelinton will be sold this summer. The Brazilian’s contract is running down into its final year so a decision will need to be made on his future.

With Bruno Guimaraes also having a release clause, it means there is a danger that Eddie Howe’s midfield could be gutted of talent during the next transfer window. It is, therefore, not a surprise that the club are hedging their bets by considering a potential move for Rabiot.

Juventus are still said to be keen on keeping the midfielder, though, so there is certainly no guarantee at this stage that he will end up at St James’ Park.
