Newcastle won’t make a decision on whether to pursue Chelsea’s Conor Gallagher until Bruno Guimaraes’ future is resolved, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano.

The England international has been mentioned as a potential transfer target for the Magpies in recent days but, writing in his Daily Briefing column, Romano said that it’s “too early” to know if he will end up moving to St James’ Park:

“We continue to see reports about Conor Gallagher’s future, with Newcastle also being linked with the midfielder now. I’m aware of Tottenham’s interest since last summer and that is still valid for Gallagher, who’s appreciated by Ange Postecoglou.

“Newcastle, meanwhile, have to focus on Financial Fair Play before thinking about that kind of move. Also nothing is clear for Bruno Guimaraes’s future yet as I’m told nothing is concrete or advanced so far for Bruno, so it’s too early to be talking about possible replacements like Gallagher or anyone else.”

Guimaraes’s exit is a strong possibility

While Newcastle would be reluctant to let the Brazilian international leave, they don’t have a lot of say in the matter due to the existence of a £100m release clause in his contract

If interested clubs, such as Arsenal and Manchester City, decide to pay the fee then it will be solely up to Guimaraes whether he leaves. The player has already stated that he is open to moving teams if the right opportunity arises.

Newcastle have a good chance of signing Gallagher

Despite being a regular starter for Chelsea this season, the midfielder is expected to be offloaded by the Blues this summer. He is closing on the final year of his contract and, as he is homegrown, it will help the club balance the books for FFP.

However, Eddie Howe’s side are not the only club pursuing Gallagher’s signature. As Romano mentions, Spurs will be in the mix, while West Ham are also known to be fans of the player.
