Newcastle have considered the possibility of re-signing Ivan Toney, according to The Athletic.

The striker was sold by the Magpies to Peterborough for just £650,000 in 2018 but his reputation has skyrocketed since then.

Toney subsequently moved to Brentford, where he scored 20 goals in the Premier League last season, but he is set to be on the move at the end of the season.

Bees boss Thomas Frank has recently stated that the 27-year-old is likely to be “sold this summer” with the forward reaching the final 12 months of his contract.

Is Newcastle’s interest in Toney serious?

The Athletic claim that Chief Scout Steve Nickson has added the player’s name to a “long list” of potential transfer targets but any move could be complicated by the club needing to adhere to Financial Fair Play rules.

However, it is believed that Brentford will have to significantly reduce the £100m price they slapped on Toney during the January transfer window. In addition, Peterborough chairman Darragh MacAnthony has revealed that the Magpies still hold a sell-on clause, which could reduce the cost of signing him further.

What are the chances that the striker will end up back at St James’ Park?

Manager Eddie Howe will be in the market for a new No.9 this summer if, as expected, Newcastle do offload the injury-prone Callum Wilson. Although reports were downplayed that he was available last month, it is believed that the forward would have been sold if a club had paid £18m.

It is debatable, though, whether Toney would be brought in as Wilson’s replacement. Even if we disregard the cost of signing the Brentford star, there is also fierce competition for his signature, with the likes of Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester United all expected to table bids.
