Newcastle midfielder Bruno Guimaraes has recommended that Premier League clubs take a look at Palmeiras attacking midfielder Raphael Veiga.

When asked whether there were any players in Brazil he would like to see in English football, Guimaraes named the 28-year-old, who is one of his former teammates:

“He’s one of the names that would fit in here. He takes corners well, shoots from distance, has a good set piece. We were together in 2018 at Athletico [Paranaense]. I think he could have a very good future if he comes to Europe.”

Veiga had an outstanding 2023 season for Palmeiras, scoring 18 goals and providing 16 assists in all competitions.

The fact that he is already in his late 20s, though, does make him a far less attractive target for the Magpies and other Premier League teams.

Back in January, the player himself spoke out to say that he was keen on trying his luck in Europe. He name-checked a number of clubs but he didn’t mention Newcastle:

“I like a lot of teams in Europe. Barcelona, Madrid, City, Arsenal and others like Manchester United… It’s difficult to say just one. There are impressive teams and they all have something special and interesting.”

Recruiting an attacking midfielder is likely to be on the Magpies’ agenda when the transfer window reopens. They missed out on James Maddison and Dominik Szoboszlai last year but there are other No.10s on the market. A few months back, the club were credited with an interest in Borussia Dortmund’s Julian Brandt.

Veiga’s s age profile doesn’t really fit Newcastle’s transfer strategy but they may listen to Guimaraes and consider a bid for him. For now, any interest is purely speculative.
